Answer Key

Mostly As

You’re extremely motivated to lose weight for a special occasion. Your answers indicate that you won’t maintain the weight loss for long because your focus is on one event. You have essentially put your life on hold to prepare for an event. If you think you can go back to normal once you reach your goal, normal will include your former, higher weight.

To stay at goal you need to change your former normal behavior to a new normal behavior that combines both your weight management actions and your lifestyle.

Mostly Bs

You’re losing weight because you hope that being slimmer will make you acceptable to yourself. Your motivation is escaping pain. Your negative feelings about yourself make you use punishment as a weight loss strategy. A punitive diet invites cheating and cheating only makes you feel worse about yourself and reinforces all your negative feelings. If you do get to goal, you may still not be satisfied with your body because it doesn’t conform to your “ideal.”

Work on self-acceptance. Instead of dieting to punish yourself for getting fat, try to take better care of your body to become fit. Embrace a new healthy lifestyle that makes you feel great!

Mostly Cs

You’ve got this! You’re making sustainable changes to your eating and exercising habits. You’re living your life while you lose weight and that’s an important part of learning how to stay at goal. Your progress may not be as fast, but you’re learning strategies to overcome challenges head-on (rather than avoid the challenging situations altogether) as you go. That’s exactly what’s needed to stay at goal. Weight management will never become fully-automatic. You will need to stay aware of your choices and continue to make the smart ones to support your weight-related goals.

Congratulations for doing it in a way that’s a good fit with your life. If there is one thing that predicts lasting success, it’s a positive incorporation of your life with your weight management.

Remember, to stay at goal, you need to get there in a way that suits you, because basically it’s what you must continue to do to stay at goal!
