If Obesity is a disease, what is the medicine to cure it?

Obesity is a disease.

I don’t want to waste time arguing whether it’s a choice or a sign of a lazy individual who won’t get off the couch and stop eating junk food.


Obesity is a disease and it’s a chronic disease; it’s a disease with no cure like arthritis, diabetes, and Crohn’s. Like many chronic diseases for which there is no cure, it is possible to manage it so that you can live a relatively normal life despite the disease.

As with most chronic diseases there are medical approaches and lifestyle changes to enable the most effective way of management.

For many, lifestyle approaches are all that’s necessary, but nobody who needs medical help should ever be discouraged from seeking it. In fact, it makes sense to start by seeking medical help to determine by a qualified professional what approach is required – medical intervention or lifestyle changes.

When medical intervention is necessary, that alone will not cure obesity or even manage it.

Medical intervention is neither magic nor cheating. Lifestyle changes will be necessary to realize all of the benefits of surgery or weight loss medications.

The idea of lifestyle changes is often daunting.

It’s really not as painful as it sounds. It’s not broad, sweeping changes in eating behaviors, food choices and physical activities. It’s adjustments to what and how you eat and how much physical activity you get. It’s learning better ways to cope with emotions and stress than eating and making it a point to get more sleep. These things can make your life better, not steal away your pleasure.


Obesity is a disease and there is no cure, but it can be managed so that if you have the disease it won’t show or get in the way of your happy life!
